What is a domain name?

A domain name is an identification method used to access specific IP addresses. An IP address is a set of numbers used to identify a specific computer or device in the TCP/IP network.

Think of it this way. As mentioned above, the internet is a virtual world with billions of real estate properties (websites). To find a house, you need to know its address and the community it belongs. The domain name acts as the address of the site in the cyberspace while the IP address is a unique numerical tag to show a specific point or site.

Let’s use Google.com as an example. In the physical world, we can casually find the search engine company in its corporate headquarters called the Googleplex located at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View, California.

In cyberspace, you can access the website by keying in google.com on your browser. By doing it, the browser will call the corresponding IP address (computers communicate using numbers) of its hosting server. In reply, the server will send the data to your browser

What are the different parts of a domain name?

Just like the names of a person, domain names have at least two parts – a top level domain (TLD) and a second level domain (SLD). Using a person’s identification as an analogy, the TLD is the surname while the SLD is the given name.

All domain names have a generic TLD (.com, .net, .io, etc.) located at its end part. The TLD acts as a classifier (like a genus in a scientific name of animals). Some of the most commonly used TLDs are .com (businesses), .org (non-profit organisations), and .gov (government agencies). At present, you can use new TLDs like .io (tech companies) and .club (brands, celebrities, sports figures). Not all TLDs are valued equally. Some have higher prices than others.

In some sites, especially multinational corporations and government agencies, the country code TLD are also used for localization. Hence you can see .fr for websites based in France, .ca in Canada, etc.

SLDs, on the other hand, are found at the beginning part. In the case of google.com, google is the SLD.

Who can register a domain name?

Anyone can register a domain name! The only time there is a registration rule is for a handful of extensions. For example, you can only register a .ltd.uk if you are actually a limited company and the domain is an exact match to your company name in that country.

Can I buy multiple domain names?

Yes, you can! If the domain names that you would like to register are not already owned by someone else then it is very possible to purchase more than one domain name with different extensions.

What is DNS?

DNS or a domain name system provides your computer with the IP address for each website. It does this by converting text-based domain names into a set of numbers that are also known as Internet Protocol Addresses (IP Addresses). Bear in mind that each website has its own IP address to make it more accessible and more machine-friendly for its users.

This system contains a comprehensive list of domain names which are then translated to IP addresses later on. Doing so allows computers and other related devices to gain access to websites and pages based solely on your IP address
